The Dozen - Thinking of California

Sometimes we can’t do much about a pending catastrophe except to think good thoughts and try to find a way to help. In the case of California wine regions which are being devastated this week by wild fires, you might crystallize those thoughts by considering choosing some of their wines, such as those in this week’s Dozen, in your next round of purchases.

2019 La Vieille Ferme Vin de France Blanc ($9). Lots of enjoyable stone fruit flavors with a hint of citrus in the finish – a very good house wine candidate.

2019 Alois Lageder “Riff” Pinot Grigio delle Venezi ($11). Pleasant apple flavors, but a bit soft rather than crisp in the finish.

2017 Chateau Khashmi “Khikhvi” Georgia  Dry Amber Wine ($12). No SO2 was used in the preservation of this “natural” wine. It’s tart and a bit harsh and puckery on the palate with flavors of dried apricot skins.

2017 William Hill Napa Valley Chardonnay ($23). Sprightly apple tastes with a barrel-toasty finish.

2018 J Vineyards Russian River Chardonnay ($27). Lively, juicy, full of fresh apple flavors, a hint of ginger, great structure.

2018 Jordan Russian River Valley Chardonnay ($33). Very enjoyable, with fresh fruitiness, but not too fruit-forward, and hints of lemon and vanilla.

NV Bisol “Jeio” Valdobiaddene Prosecco Superiore Brut ($17). Enjoyable apple flavors with underlying minerality and a crisp finish.

2019 La Vieille Ferme Vin de France Rouge ($9). Light but with lively red berries, a little spicy, crisp in the finish.

2018 Teliani Valley “Guardian” Telavi Georgia Saperavi ($13). Intensively fruity and very tart with concentrated cherry and berry flavors.

2017 Alma Rosa Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir ($30). Quite nice – lean Pinot with firm, lightly gamey cherry flavors.

2017 Domaine Anderson Anderson Valley Pinot Noir ($44). From the Roederer sparkling wine family, this Pinot has full, fresh raspberry flavors with lots of clean acidity.

2017 Viader Napa Valley Black Label Red Wine ($150). Excellent concentrated flavors of cassis and dark cherry with a touch of burnished vanilla in the finish. This wine improves with time in the decanter and will age for decades in the cellar.
