The Dozen - Big Reds & Rums

This week’s Dozen consists mainly of big reds, even the Pinot Noirs, and one of them is a real steal. And for those long summer evenings, we’ve tossed in some rums from the Caribbean to send you off to sweet dreamland.

2018 Esporão Alentejano Colheita Branco ($16). Spicy stone fruit flavors with some nuttiness, medium body, good acidity.

NV Mionetto Il Prosecco ($12). Mellow apple fruitiness, nice mousse, nutty finish.

NV Mionetto Italian Brut Rosé Extra Dry ($16). Good structure with pleasant light- cherry flavors.

2019 Epoch Paso Robles Rosé ($30). Very refreshing with intense fruit flavors, good acidity and some savory notes.

2017 Ancient Peaks Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($22). Can I get emotional here? This wine is a steal! Lovely, well-groomed purple fruit flavors, a little creamy, over a bed of walnuty tannins.

2017 Ancient Peaks “Oyster Ridge” Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon ($50). A big, concentrated, dark-fruit, fruit-forward wine, showing a bit of high alcohol on the palate – but it’s your wine if you like your Cabs big.

2018 EnRoute “Northern Spy” Russian River Valley Pinot Noir ($85). Concentrated cherries and a touch fruity sweet with nice, edgy bitters in the finish.

2016 Sullivan “Coeur de Vigne” Rutherford Red Blend ($93). A delightful Bordeaux blend that is drinkable now and will age well – dark berry flavors with some savory notes.

2016 Sullivan “James O’Neil” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($269). Very nice rounded cherry flavors, a touch on the fruity/sweet side with smooth tannins in the finish.

Admiral Rodney “Royal Oak” Santa Lucia Rum ($80). Aged 7-12 years, 40% ABV. Wood spices and taffy dominate this delicious, smooth rum with a light aftertaste of molasses.

Admiral Rodney “HMS Formidable” Santa Lucia Rum ($130).  Aged 9-12 years, 40% ABV. Beautiful hints of rancio in the nose. More toffee than taffy in this one. Very nice finishing bite with a long aftertaste.

Rhum Clément “Cuvée Homère” Martinique Rum ($110). 7-15 years, 42% ABV, ex-Bourbon barrels. Lovely, mellow green aromas, very smooth and light on the palate in spite of the alcohol, almost creamy, some nutty flavors.
