The Dozen - 11 Under $20

And so we pass into the summer doldrums – days of entertaining with one other couple on the porch or patio with social distancing and bring-your-own lunches and utensils, and we’ll provide the wine.

This week’s Dozen is perfect for that – mainly chillable whites, sparklers and rosés for $20 and under. But to keep up The Dozen’s higher quality-for-price standards, we do have one big but smooth Napa Valley red for drinking after the sun goes down.

The days are getting shorter already, so enjoy summer while we can.

2018 Masciarelli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo ($11). Good basic value wine – apple fruitiness, long in the finish, good acidity.

2018 Umani Rochi “Villa Bianchi” Verdicchio dei Castelli de Jesi Classico ($12). Fruity but somewhat oxidized apple/pear flavors with good acidity.

2018 Domäne Wachau “Terrassen Federspeil” Wachau Grüner Veltliner ($18). Lovely and lively with mild green-fruity flavors, some spritz and a mildly crisp finish.

2019 Priest Ranch Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc ($19). A creamier, less-vegetal style of Sauvignon with exotic spicy notes.

NV Cleto Chiarli “Centenario” Grasparossa di Castelvetro Lambrusco Amabile ($12). Fruity, but a very refreshing red bubbly with low alcohol at 8%. Good wine for grilled meats.

NV Gratien & Meyer Crémant de Loire Brut Rosé ($16). Slight creamy, slightly tart with light strawberry flavors.

NV Alma Negra Mendoza Brut Nature ($20). Good personality – frothy bubbles, crisp dried strawberries, a little spicy – a good food bubbly.

2019 Cellier des Dauphins Côtes du Rhone Reserve Rosé ($11). Enjoyable tart, citrusy flavors, mainly orange.

2019 CVNE “Cune” Rioja Rosado ($12). Very bright cherry flavors with moderate crispness in finish.

2019 Château Lauriga Côtes du Roussillon Rosé ($17). Light but juicy, with plump strawberries.

2018 Herdade dos Grous Alentejano Tinto ($19). Rich flavors but a bit aggressive – better with food than just sipping.

2016 Stags’ Leap “The Leap” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($85). Smooth and generous with purple fruits and dusty tannins.
